Before you buy: 5 Things to consider when purchasing slippers
To say that there’s no such thing as a “conventional” men’s slipper might be a stretch, but it’s true that there’s a wide variety from which to choose. Choosing the right pair for you may be challenging (but shouldn’t be daunting), and it’s important to remember that a certain style that works for another man may not work for you.
Let’s break down the buying process a bit to help you make your best choice.
1. Comfort. Is. King.
So, what’s the point of wearing slippers if they aren’t comfortable? Yes, slippers can keep your feet warm on those chilly winter nights when you’re kicking back with a drink and a book, but they have to be comfortable, or you’ll soon tire of them.
And, again, a certain a style and cut that’s comfortable for someone else may not be comfortable for you. Slippers are meant to be comfortable at all times. So, before you buy, make sure that the slippers you may choose are something you can wear around the house for an extended period.
If not, why bother?
2. The material
Most of the best men’s slippers consist of genuine leather or suede. Both materials wear well over time and provide durability and comfort. Also, natural animal skins make for a cozier environment for your feet (again, it’s all about comfort) while helping to keep them warm during those long, relentless nights of mid-February.
Cotton is another material used to make slippers and provide comfort as well as the convenience of easy cleaning; just toss them into the washing machine, if necessary. Natural fibers like cotton also have the advantage that they’re more affordable than leather and suede.
Note: scratches and spills on slippers made from the animal skin may require professional cleaning to bring them back to their original shape.
3. The fit
While getting the proper fit brings us back to tip #1 (comfort) it’s worth singling out because of its importance. It only makes sense to try on slippers at your favorite store because sizing between slippers and your everyday shoe may vary.
Buying slippers online is trickier, so be careful to read each pair’s sizing guide, and pay attention to reviewers who report that a certain pair runs big or small.
4. The type
There are many types of slipper designs:
- Loafers and slip-on slippers
You’ll have no trouble recognizing loafer shoes and slip-ons. They almost never come with laces and you can slip in and out of them easily. They also cover your entire foot – toes to heels – although, depending on the design, parts of your upper foot may be exposed.
- Moccasin slippers
Traditionally crafted from animal hide, moccasins are lightweight but durable, and even good for occasional outdoor use – like getting the mail, etc.
- Mules and clogs
Mules and clogs don’t cover the upper area of your heel but will cover your toes and tops of your feet. While everyone can wear them, they’re great for men who have back problems or other health issues that make it hard to put on conventional slippers and shoes.
- Boot slippers
If keeping your feet warm is your main priority, or if you have perpetually cold feet, then you may want to check out boot slippers. They cover your ankles and are cut in a way to help you withstand even the cold of a log cabin getaway.
- Outdoor slippers
Many slippers are designed for indoor and outdoor use and come with a tough sole. They’re usually weather-treated, as well.
- Orthopedic slippers
Orthopedic slippers have built-in support in the insole for people who suffer from back or heel pain. The insoles often come in gel or padded varieties. If you suffer from heel spurs or plantar fasciitis, orthopedic slippers are the way to go.
5. The hardness of your floor
The harder the floor, the thicker the soles. That’s important if your house or apartment has hardwood flooring or other types of uncovered hard surfaces, but not as important if carpeting is your flooring of choice.
Now that you have some buying tips, let’s dig into our reviews of the best slippers for men.
The 7 best slippers for men 2019
Not every slipper has a lining made of natural wool, like the UGG Men’s Ascot, and there is a difference. Lined with sheep’s wool, the made-in-Australia Ascot envelops your feet in warmth and comfort.
But there’s more.
UGG is a popular seller around the world and garners a ton of positive reviews for a lot of reasons, including:
- Outer consists of soft, water-resistant suede or leather that enables you to use the UGG Ascot for indoor and outdoor use. The Ascot has the same style as a loafer shoe.
- Rubber outsole – described as rugged yet unobtrusive – is solid and provides good traction and comfort.
- Wool lining is comfortable but also form-fits to your foot with extended use. The Ascot gets even more comfortable the longer you wear it.
- Leather is thick and grainy with rugged stitching that’s made to last.
- You’ll love the Ascot’s overall classy look that makes for ideal home footwear but also good for occasional outdoor use. If you don’t feel like changing out of your slippers to walk the dog, so be it.
- The Ascot is all about durability and you should easily get several years of use out of each pair.
While Ascot’s suede design is water-resistant, you should always take care to blot away spills and stains right away. UGG makes cleaning and care products to help your slipper maintain its original look, including water and stain repellant.
- Sheep’s wool lining
- Comes in suede or leather
- Classy look fit for indoor or outdoor wear
- Sizes may run small
A lot of people love the UGG Ascot and with good reason. You can’t beat its natural wool lining and it has a classic, loafer-style look that’s even appropriate for occasional outdoor wear.
Your feet can get tired even if you don’t spend the majority of your workday standing or walking. So, why not baby them with the best house slippers for men?
You’ll do just with a pair of HomeIdeas Men’s Woolen Fabric Memory Foam House Slippers. Made of breathable, extremely comfortable woolen fabric, they’re certainly at the head of the line when it comes to men’s house slippers.
There are plenty of reasons why we like these slippers so much:
- It’s hard to beat the comfort when you combine a layer of memory foam with an elastic sponge heel – and with an ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA) cushion that provides further softness and flexibility.
- Woolen fabric helps keep your feet dry and odorless because it provides a high degree of ventilation. They’re certainly among the best slippers for sweaty feet.
- They come with anti-slip soles that provide secure footing on any indoor surface. Made of waterproof thermoplastic rubber, the soles won’t deform easily and won’t leave scratch marks on hard floor surfaces such as wood. Better yet, they reduce foot stress.
- You’ll also love the quietness provided by the soles. You can move easily about the house without worrying that you’ll wake your loved ones.
- They come in a variety of sizes an in three colors: caramel, gray, and black.
- They’re hand and machine-washable.
- HomeIdeas offers a 100% no-risk money-back guarantee.
- Anti-slip soles
- Be careful of sizing
You’ll find HomeIdeas Men’s Woolen Fabric Memory Foam slippers in multiple reviews of the best men’s slippers, and with good reason. Whether it’s their comfort or the security of no-slip soles, these slippers are worth the investment.
There’s nothing like the convenience of a slip-on slipper – simply slide your feet into them and you’re good to go. Many men, however, prefer a boot slipper – such as the Sorel Men’s Manawan – for full comfort as well as for the ability to make a quick trip outside without worrying that your slipper will fall off.
We love the design of the Manawan slipper and it’s one of the reasons why we’ve included it on our list. As mentioned, it’s a boot style slipper, but it has a long slit on the top side so that your feet rest comfortably in the slipper without having to use laces or zippers to keep them on.
The Sorel Manawan has a fleece lining that makes it great for lounging around the house on chilly days, but it’s also breathable enough so that you’re feet don’t become too toasty.
We also like the suede leather upper of the Sorel Manawan that not only looks good, but should also provide you years of use.
Meanwhile, its natural rubber sole provides plenty of grip and the security of knowing that you can step outside for a moment (to get the mail or something from your car) without having to change into shoes or boots.
Check out this video for a closer look at the Sorel Manawan.
- Overall warmth is second-to-none
- Suitable for quick trips outside
- Comfortable outsoles provide plenty of grip
- May run a bit large
The Sorel Manawan is a durable, comfortable slipper that will keep your feet warm on even the coldest of nights. They look good, feel good, and certainly rank among the best men’s slippers.
It’s not easy finding a slipper that’s fit for an astronaut. But that’s exactly what you’ll find with the ACORN Men’s Moc Slipper, which has been worn by astronauts on every NASA Space Shuttle mission since 1982.
It all started in 1976, however, when Maine outdoorsman David Quinn designed a slipper sock for his friends and fellow outdoor buffs.
The popularity of the Original Slipper Sock led to other Acorn designs, including the Moc slipper that’s suitable for indoor and outdoor use.
And, as mentioned, good for outer space use.
The Acorn Moc is just one in a line of quality slippers produced by Quinn’s company – a line that includes Classic Comfort, Studio Comfort, Spa Comfort, and more.
Unlike many slippers for men, or for women for that matter, Acorn’s slippers consist of 100% polyester blend that makes them perfect for men who are animal-conscious. You won’t find natural hides in the construction of the Acorn Moc.
The uppers have the look of (faux) suede and fur, and are very durable. Unlike with slippers made of real suede, you can machine wash your Acorn Mocs to keep them looking as good as new.
A natural blend lining helps the Moc achieve maximum breathability and moisture control. Your feet stay comfortably warm without you having to worry about excess sweat. The foot cushion is multilayered and provides superior comfort with every step you take, while the arch support delivers maximum stability.
Another reason to love Acorn’s Mocs is their skid-resistant outsole. Again, you can wear these slippers practically anywhere: inside your home, in your hammock, around the firepit, or just for running out to grab the mail or for another quick errand.
- Perfect for an active lifestyle
- The lining prevents excess sweating
- The outsoles are good for outdoor and indoor use
- Some reviewers don’t like the feel of the acorn emblem
Acorn’s Mocs provide stability and comfort every step of the way – even if you’re “walking” around in outer space. Excellent craftsmanship helps make this a quality choice for all men.
Wait a sec – did someone say that Deer Stags’ Indoor Outdoor sock slippers are like “sweatpants for your feet?” Yes, they did and whether that’s a case of hyperbole or not, it’s not a bad way to describe the comfort level of these slippers.
Deer Stags experience in the footwear game goes back to 1929, so they obviously know a thing or two about keeping your feet comfortable and cozy. With the Men’s Wherever sock slipper, you’ll enjoy the comfort whether you’re in your home or outdoors.
And their versatility extends to their style, too. They look great with your pajamas when you’re lounging about the house, but you can also wear them with some great looking jeans without catching grief for it. Why? Because of their micro-suede upper that has a classic, stylish look, as well as superb embroidery detail.
Make no mistake, however, these stylish, comfortable slipper socks are fit for indoor and outdoor use, thanks in large part to their thermoplastic rubber outsoles that provide support while standing up to the less-forgiving outdoor terrain.
Not that we’re saying you should wear your Deer Stags on a hike – you do have to be careful not to mar the suede uppers, after all – but they’re perfect for a leisurely stroll about town or something simpler, like getting the newspaper or mail. You can even wear them to the coffee shop.
Of course, comfort is king when it comes to slippers and the Deer Stags’ soft lining and padded insole provides all-day shock absorption and provide comfort whether you wear them with socks or bare feet. You’ll appreciate that the support feels as solid and stable as your regular shoes.
The “secret” is Deer Stags’ patented S.U.P.R.O. Sock lining that even provides extra heel cushioning.
- Good for indoor and outdoor use
- Superior insole comfort
- Solid, slip-resistant outsole
- May run a bit small
The Deer Stags company knows a thing or two about making comfortable footwear that’s good for a variety of uses. The Men’s Wherever Indoor Outdoor sock slipper is perfect for the home or a casual outing away from home.
There’s nothing wrong with spoiling yourself after a hard day’s work. You deserve it. Your feet deserve it.
The Tamarac Scruffy Clog Slippers by Slippers International are just what the both of you need when you want to kick back and decompress after a long day. They consist of leather uppers while the lining is made of fleece to help keep your feet warm on colder evenings.
You’ll also enjoy the Tamarac’s memory foam insole that comforts your tired feet and cushions your every stride. The last you want to do after a long day is walk around in footwear – or no footwear – that adds more physical and mental strain.
Because it’s a clog-style slipper, it’s open in the back and allows you to slip in and out of it with ease. The hard rubber outsole, meanwhile, provides excellent enough traction to make the Tamarac good for occasional outdoor use.
In case you’re wondering, Slippers International is a Massachusetts-based wholesaler of men’s, women’s, boy’s, and girl’s footwear, including slippers, shoes, boots and sandals. The Tamarac earns plenty of rave reviews and with good reason because we think they’re the best men’s leather house slippers.
Reviewers like that the Tamarac’s solid sole makes them good for indoor and outdoor use, and the ease at which they can slip into them. While the Tamarac may feel a bit tight in the beginning, they break in easily and quickly to provide a perfect fit.
You can get the Men’s Scruffy Clog Slippers in a variety of colors: black, navy, allspice, root beer, and charcoal grey.
- Provide long-lasting comfort
- Solid sole makes it good for outdoor use, as well
- Thick, comfortable clog heel
- Some reviewers say the insole becomes too warm
The Tamarack is a favorite that has garnered over 1,000 reviews on Amazon. You won’t find a better men’s leather house slipper and it comes at a good value.
Earlier, we talked about “sweatpants” for your feet – a description (not ours) used when discussing Deer Stags’ Indoor Outdoor Sock Slipper.
Now we’re going to talk about “sleeping bags” for your feet, which is an apt description for the Baffin Unisex Cush Insulated Slipper. Come to think of it, the Cush slipper somewhat resembles a sleeping bag thanks to a nylon outer that helps keep the cold out and the heat inside.
One would expect that Canadian-based Baffin knows a thing or two about keeping feet warm during the coldest of days and nights. Not only that, but Baffin understands that comfortable slippers don’t have to be just for indoor use, but also for folks who take their slippers with them camping or while traveling.
Baffin is committed to developing footwear, and not only slippers, that withstands the elements while providing superior comfort at all times.
All that said, there’s plenty to like about the Unisex Cush Insulated Slipper beyond its overall comfort (and the fact that they’re suitable for men and women).
- Cush slipper has a drawstring closure that you would see on the outer shell of your jacket or, yes, a sleeping bag. The drawstring prevents the slippers from coming off with extended use.
- As mentioned, the nylon outer keeps out the cold while the down-filled insole provides warmth and comfort whether you’re walking, lying down, or standing.
- The insole is “Polar Proven” and hugs every curve of your feet.
- The synthetic outsole provides excellent traction and is good for both indoor and outdoor terrain. While you wouldn’t wear these slippers on a long hike, you can still travel short distances outside comfortably.
- The drawstring cord also makes it easy to take the slippers on and off.
- The insole is warm but not too warm so that it makes your feet sweat.
- Provide excellent warmth
- Good for indoor and outdoor wear
- Some reviewers suggest that the insole could provide more cushioning
You understand the comfort of a cozy sleeping bag and the Baffin Cush Insulated Slipper delivers the same snug feeling. Whether you’re at home or on a camping trip, these slippers provide the comfort you deserve.
Taking care of your slippers: The basics
Once you’ve found slippers that best fit your needs and are always comfortable, you’ll quickly enjoy their many benefits. But you want them to last and choosing for durability is an important consideration.
However, you can take a proactive approach by taking care of your slippers properly to ensure their long, happy life. The following are tips for taking good care of your leather, suede, or cotton slippers.
Consistently cleaning the exteriors of your leather slippers helps to extend their lifespan. However, make sure to use products, such as non-enzyme liquid soaps, that won’t ruin or discolor the leather.
After you’ve washed the outside of your leather slippers, let them air dry for five minutes before shining them with a soft cotton cloth. You should also use a leather shoe conditioner to keep the exteriors soft and moisturized; doing so helps your slippers age better.
Baby wipes are handy for cleaning the insides of your slippers, especially those lined with fleece.
Perhaps the most important thing to know about caring for suede slippers is that you cannot machine wash or hand wash them – or in any way that submerges them in water. Should you spill something on the suede, you a clean towel to blot (not rub) at the spill until it’s gone.
You can use a damp towel to wipe up spills if your suede slippers are waterproof.
If the stain is stubborn, invest in a suede cleaning kit that comes with a stain eraser and stiff suede brush. Soft-textured sandpaper can remove mud and scuff marks.
As with genuine leather slippers, use a baby wipe to clean the interior of your suede slippers. Baby wipes work well with fleece and cotton-lined interiors.
One of the best things about cotton slippers is how easy they are to clean. You can toss them in the washing machine (just make sure you use warm, not hot, water), or you can wash them by hand in a sink filled with warm, soapy water.
If you use a sink, let your slippers soak in the soapy water for about 10 minutes before you rinse them out. Let your slippers air dry once you’ve rinsed the soap out.
Why slippers are best vs. all the rest
Comfort. Coziness. Easy on the feet. There are plenty of reasons why slippers are better than the rest when it comes to footwear for the home. True, many slippers are good for some outdoor use, but our focus is on their many benefits for home use.
1. Slippers keep you healthy
Many experts agree that having cold feet increases your chances of catching colds or the flu. For some reason, chilly feet decrease your body’s ability to fight off illnesses and disease. Moreover, slippers protect against foot infections, unlike walking around your house in your bare feet.
2. Wear slippers, keep your house clean
Most of us would cringe if we understood the number of bacteria, dirt, grime, and other nasty stuff that we drag into the house from the soles of your shoes. So, take your shoes off at the door and put on your slippers instead. You and your house will be better for it.
3. Slippers prevent accidents
Slip-sliding around your wood, linoleum, or tile floors is an accident waiting to happen when you’re wearing socks. Most slippers – at least the best ones – have slip-resistant soles that serve you well when you’re rushing to answer the door or to tend to a boiling-over pot on your stove.
4. Comfort means productivity
It’s tough to tend to household tasks when your feet are freezing. Studies show that productive workers are relaxed workers, and nothing quite illustrates “relaxed” than a nice pair of warm, comfortable slippers.
5. Slippers are lifesavers for your socks
Tired of always having to buy new socks when your current ones develop holes in them? Well, wearing your socks around the home adds wear and tear, but slippers will give both your socks and your feet a break.
Slippers aren’t the only game in town, of course, although we highly recommend them for home use. Let’s take a look at other types of footwear – namely, flip-flops, sandals, and shoes – and how they compare to slippers when worn about the house.
Some men swear by flip-flops, many others don’t. Not that there’s a lot to love or hate about them, but flip-flops are more of a personal taste, perhaps, than other types of footwear.
Here’s the thing, however. Podiatrists say that you should only wear flip-flops occasionally, like at the beach or swimming pool, because they offer almost no protection or support for your feet.
And, because flip-flops have flat soles, they place undue tension and pulling of the plantar fascia. That’s reason enough to limit your flip-flop use to only a handful of occasions.
Not to continue our ambush of flip-flops, but they’re also dangerous because they don’t secure themselves to your feet like slippers, sandals, or shoes. You certainly don’t want to get one caught in a step, or an escalator.
There aren’t many differences between sandals and flip-flops, although you can easily tell them apart, and many of the same potential hazards exist for wearing sandals for a prolonged period around the house.
For one, most sandals have flat soles that place extra tension on your plantar fascia. For another, sandals typically aren’t as snug as slippers and may fall off and cause mishaps.
Nothing against shoes, because all of us wear them, but there are a lot of reasons not to wear them inside the house, not the least of which is giving your tired feet a break at the end of a long day.
But, as mentioned early, the soles of your shoes collect a lot of unhealthy, nasty stuff throughout your day – stuff that you shouldn’t spread all over your home’s floors knowingly.
Some parents of newborns insist on wearing shoes in the house to prevent the risk of slipping, while others like wearing them because they’ve grown tired of stepping on children’s toys (if you’ve ever stepped on a Lego you understand their pain).
How we chose our best slippers
A lot of things go into the making of a good slipper and we considered many factors. Comfort is at the top of the list, of course, but other things separate a good slipper from a bad one, including design, durability, stability, etc.
We also examined the versatility of each slipper, especially since many of them have a dual indoor-outdoor capability, as well as the traction of its soles. Price is another factor, and we’re always mindful of the fact that the best things aren’t always the most expensive. We always strive to include products to fit a variety of budgets, however.
That wraps up another review and, as always, we welcome your suggestions and comments. Have you worn any of the slippers on our list? Is there another pair that’s your favorite? We’d love to hear from you.
