Before you buy: 7 Things to consider when purchasing skinny jeans

1. Quality

As with any type of trouser, quality is king. There’s absolutely no doubt about it: if the quality of your jeans isn’t great, then they aren’t going to be worth buying.

Let’s just illustrate that point with an example: Quality encompasses everything from comfort to choice of material and color.

When deciding what pair of jeans to buy, you don’t want to buy a pair that’s uncomfortable, nor do you want to buy a pair of jeans that only will last a few weeks.

It’s one thing to look good, but it’s another thing to look good in a pair of jeans that at least have some longevity.

As we just noticed, quality can cover a wide range of factors. You want your jeans to be comfortable, you want them to be durable, and you want them to look good for your specific needs.

To help you out with this, we’ll also cover the majority of these factors in this section, giving you all of the purchasing tips we feel you need.

2. Comfort

So, moving on to comfort – and it is important to really note how imperative it is that your jeans are comfortable. We expect that everyone, at least once in their lives, has worn a pair of jeans that are uncomfortable and feel like a straightjacket for your legs.

To prevent this, and to provide you with enjoyment whilst wearing your skinny jeans, you want to make sure you’re getting the most comfortable skinny jeans.

Looking out for comfort can be difficult. It’s not as if you can just see comfort with your eyes without trying a pair on, but the way that we can tell if jeans are comfortable is by looking at the material and the customer reviews.

Customer reviews are highly important to us, as they allow us to see whether or not a pair of jeans is favored by the majority. Of course, some reviews may be skewed, but it is a useful way of telling if a pair of jeans is going to be a good pick for most men.

3. Style

Even though skinny jeans are, well, just skinny jeans, you’ll probably be surprised to know that there are multiple styles of them.

Whilst skinny jeans typically all follow the same style, and are just cut close to the leg and taper as they go down the thigh and calf, you’ll be able to find some other styles at the same time.

One example is the ‘spray-on’ style jean. This takes skinny jean to a whole different level, as they’re so tight you won’t have an inch of room between fabric and leg.

However, whilst this sounds like it could be risky, most men will actually love this style, because they are typically much comfier than a regular-fitted jean and feel more like a jogger/legging than a jean.

Not only that, but if you’re particularly brave, you can go out and try skinny jeans that have rips or a ‘distressed’ vibe.

This isn’t for everyone – we can understand that – but for those men who spend half of their life lifting weights and drinking protein shakes, then you’ll probably love the appearance that men’s spray-on skinny jeans with distressed look will give you.

4. Occasion

When choosing your new pair of skinny jeans for men, you probably have a scenario in mind.

Some of you may be just wanting a new pair of jeans for casual wear at the weekends, whereas some of you may be looking for a pair of jeans that you’ll be wearing all day every day at work.

Regardless of your preference, you want to ensure that you’re buying a pair of skinny jeans that are fit for purpose and will not look out of place.

To take one of those previous examples, if you’re looking for a pair of skinny jeans for work, then you will probably want to either go for dark denim or black. Both of these are inoffensive styles that won’t look out of place in an office environment.

On the other side of the spectrum, if you’re looking for a pair to wear on nights out, then you could probably push the boat out a bit and get a pair with a distressed or ripped style.

5. Durability

A big factor in the quality of a pair of skinny jeans will be durability. With jeans, it is slightly different from other pairs of trousers and other garments like t-shirts.

Whereas you may wear a t-shirt once or twice a week, you’ll probably wear jeans at least four or five times a week.

When you’re wearing something that often, you want to make sure that the quality is enough to prevent them from breaking down and becoming useless quickly.

A good pair of jeans should last you between six months and a year – or even longer if you are going with a higher price range and/or a brand known for its durability.

If you are wearing your jeans only sporadically, then you can expect a good pair to last you in excess of a year.

At the end of the day, you want your jeans to last you a good few outings and retain their shape well. Once a pair of jeans starts to become loose and lose the ‘skinny’ fitting, then you’ll want to get yourself a new pair.

6. Brand

Another thing to take into consideration with any type of clothing is the brand you’re going for. Every one of us probably has a favorite when it comes to sneakers. For example, you may love New Balance or Adidas and often refuse to shop elsewhere.

It can be the same for your jeans. Some companies, like Levi’s, are world famous for their quality and can be a great choice if your budget allows it. Some other brands include Enzo and Calvin Klein.

If you’re wanting to go even more south, and push into the hundreds or even thousands of dollars, then you could look at some luxury designer brands like True Religion, Balmain, or even Gucci.

For the rest of us, however, we probably want just look at the classic brands like Levi’s.

Long story short, we just want to emphasize that you can probably find a pair of jeans that will suit your brand preferences. For a lot of people, this makes it easier to make a big purchase, because you can be sure of the quality that you’ll be getting.

7. Price

Whether or not we like to admit it, price is something that will limit the majority of us when it comes to buying anything.

Unless your bank account is a bottomless pit, then you’ll likely have a budget that you’re trying to stick to and a maximum amount that you’d like to spend on a single pair of jeans.

However, this budget will massively vary from person to person. For one of you, $100 will be your budget, and $20 will be another.

There’s no shame in having a budget, and we wanted to be fair to all. To honor this, we have chosen jeans from all different price ranges and budgets, so that there is something for everyone.

8. Measurements

Most men are pretty sure what their measurements or jean sizes are.  But did you actually grab a measuring tape and take your measurements within the past six months?  Buying skinny jeans is a little bit different from buying other jeans types because they have a tighter fit on your body. A well-fitted pair of jeans should feel comfortable around your waist and hips without much slack.  It also shouldn’t be too tight or too loose around your legs.

The reason you can’t just buy your usual size is that a lot of jeans manufacturers use slightly different margins for jean sizes. A size 8 pair of jeans that fit great in one store or brand might be much too tight if you get it in another brand.

The length of your legs and torso can also have an impact on the fit and look of your jeans. Taking measurements before you buy can save you a lot of time and effort because you will buy the perfect size without needing to return or replace the item.

Good jean brands like Levi, usually have diagrams on their website or on online distribution sites that give you some guidelines to help you take accurate measurements. These diagrams will show you where to take the measurements, and there is usually a size guide that you can check out to get the perfect sized jeans.

Bottom Line

If you thought skinny jeans weren’t for everyone in the first place, then it will be taken to the extremes with this pair of skinny jeans. With ripped knees and a distressed thigh, it provides a look that some of the bravest will love.

Reasons men love to wear tight skinny jeans

Not all men love skinny jeans, but this jean style is a lot more popular compared to other styles.  There are also quite a few different ways to wear skinny jeans. You don’t always have to wear super tight skinny jeans to look good. Lots of men prefer a slightly bigger size that offers a looser and more comfortable fit. Here are a few reasons to love these popular jeans.

Good mobility

Some jeans (like flair, boot cut, or bell-bottom jeans) can get in your way when you run.  The wide area around your legs can flap around while you walk which can be annoying. With skinny jeans there is nothing to restrict your movement.

The wider your jean legs are, the noisier you become when you walk. Even straight-leg jeans tend to be noisy because they are wide at the ankle area, and they can make sounds when your legs pass each other.

Show off your footwear

With skinny jeans, you can truly show off your snazzy shoes.  There is no denim to hang over your gorgeous shoes.

Show off your body

Men are more health-conscious these days, and they look much better as a result.  Those rock-hard muscles took a long time to build. They are best displayed in a pair of skinny-fit jeans.

How to pull off skinny jeans correctly

Try to suit your build

As with any item of clothing, you ideally want your skinny jeans to suit your build. If you’re someone who is stocky and well-built thanks to thousands of hours repping out the leg press down the gym, then getting an extreme super skinny fit could be perfect for you.

On the other hand, if you are someone who is really skinny and with almost zero muscle mass on your legs, then maybe go for the regular fitted skinny jeans, because they’ll look nice without doing you any injustice.

Try combining them with ankle boots

One thing to always think about when wearing jeans is what you’ll combine them with. Fortunately, as skinny jeans are naturally tight at the ankle, it opens up a huge array of potential shoe combinations.

Whilst we always recommend a pair of nice, plain sneakers, we would also like to give an honorable mention to the magical ankle boots – ankle boots like brogues, Chelsea’s or Chukka boots.

If you do this, then you’ll immediately be able to boost your style. Think Harry Styles in his prime.

Roll the bottoms, if needed

There’s plenty to like about this little adjustment to your outfit. By doing a small roll at the bottom of your skinny jeans, you open up plenty of different styles that you can pull off.

Firstly, if you decide to wear some black, smart socks, then you’ll be able to use this rolled style at work or other formal scenarios.

Secondly, you could pair them with some white socks to give a little bit of a contrast with some sneakers. This look can be particularly nice if you have white shoes and are looking for a way to blend them in with some black or blue jeans.

Thirdly, you may decide to wear trainer socks. This look is one that is coming in more and more over the last few years, showing off a bit of ankle, and is a huge favorite during the summer time.

Combine with smart shoes like loafers

Something that is becoming increasingly popular over the last couple of years is combining skinny jeans with a pair of smart shoes like loafers.

Whilst you may be used to just wearing loafers with smart trousers, swapping them out for skinny jeans can be an excellent choice – both in terms of comfort and practicality. They look good and feel comfortable. Perfect.

Wear as part of a suit

One thing that you can do with skinny jeans is couple them with a blazer and a shirt. Yeah, that may sound strange, but, in actuality, it’s not bad at all.

In fact, more and more people are doing it. You can combine skinny jeans with a blazer and have a perfect smart casual outfit. This makes your life a lot easier when dressing for parties, dates, and dinners.

Not only that, but if you’re not at a job where it is absolutely necessary, you can still wear a blazer to work whilst retaining huge comfort on your lower half.

Build some leg muscle

This is some unorthodox advice, because inevitably a lot of people will not enjoy the gym for one reason or another. However, if you are someone who enjoys the gym and working out, then this could be great advice.

For a lot of people, the pure notion of skinny jeans seems painful, because they don’t have legs that look good in that style. Simply put, they may feel like they’ll be making themselves look either skinny or fat.

What’s the best way around that?

Building some solid leg muscle and, instead of looking silly, you’ll just look like you were made for them. Skinny jeans will obviously wrap around whatever muscle you have and accentuate it even further.

So, if you’re unhappy with the way you look in your skinny jeans, perhaps consider adding barbell squats to your gym routine.

Go with inoffensive colors if you are unsure

If it’s your first time buying a pair of skinny jeans, you probably should stay away from something indigo or white.

They can look good on the right people, but without the foundation of skinny jean-wearing confidence in the first place, you’re probably not one of those people.

Instead, we recommend that you stick to the best black skinny jeans or regular blue denim jeans. These are relatively fail-safe and will look good with the majority of outfits.

If you think about it, most people own black, navies, and greys in their wardrobe. Getting a pair of jeans that goes with all of these colors is your best bet.

Skinny jeans vs other types of jeans

Whilst we’ve based this entire article around skinny jeans, we can’t just ignore that there are plenty of other styles of jeans around.

If you’re going shopping for a new pair, then you’ll come across the majority of these, but you’ll probably wonder what they are and what the differences are.

To help you out and provide you with some sort of understanding, we will now discuss the different types of jeans.

Skinny Jeans

As you’ve probably guessed by now, we rate skinny jeans. We think that they are a great option for most men, as times are changing, and there are now hundreds of brands to choose from.

Skinny jeans mold to the shape of your leg from top to bottom. From your thighs to your calves, you will have material that stretches and sculpts to that shape. They are a tighter fit across the thigh and typically fit just beneath the waist for comfort.

Spray-on Jeans

First of all, you’ve got spray-on jeans. These are a variation of the skinny jean, but even skinnier. When you see members of boy bands in the newspaper wearing a pair of jeans that are skin tight, it’s probably spray-on and not skinny.

Spray-on jeans take skinny jeans to the extreme, but that’s not always a bad thing. In fact, we think that there are plenty to things to love about spray-on jeans. First, they almost always provide you with a bit of extra comfort.

Spray-on jeans have extra spandex or elastane, as, inevitably, you’ll need a bit more of a stretch when wearing spray-on jeans, otherwise you wouldn’t be able to move around.

Slim-fit Jeans

Slim-fit jeans are much closer to a regular fit than a skinny fit. Visually, they’re pretty similar, but they have one key difference: the tapering of the ankle.

The narrow leg opening means that things are tighter at the ankle, and this means that you can combine your jeans with your shoes a bit better.

For those who aren’t quite ready to take the plunge to skinny jeans, this is probably your best bet. They are great, because you get the freedom of movement that skinny jeans provide whilst still accentuating your frame and wearing an inoffensive style.

Tapered Jeans

Tapered jeans are a good middle ground between slim and skinny fit jeans. These jeans are often preferred by muscular guys with big thighs. The jeans are tapered but they are wider around the thigh area and more drawn in around the ankle. These jeans are ideal for showing off your perfect legs.

Regular-fit Jeans

Regular-fit jeans are the ones that most people have worn forever. They fit straight from hip to thigh, and then they have a large leg opening making them perfect for everyone – tall or short, big or lean.

We recommend that you wear regular-fit jeans if you feel like the shape of your legs wouldn’t suit slim or skinny fit jeans.

Bootcut Jeans

Bootcut jeans are going out of style recently, and it is quite easy to see why. They have incredibly open bottoms and typically result in your jeans dragging along the floor and hiding the majority of your shoe.

Unfortunately, bootcut jeans have found themselves starring in sarcastic memes over the last 12 months, and they probably won’t be the best idea moving forward. Well, if you actually respect yourself, that is.

Relaxed-fit Jeans

Relaxed-fit jeans are typically a favorite among bigger-boned people.

They provide you with much more room than other styles of jeans, and they fit loosely around the leg and around the thigh, meaning that you will be able to stay comfortable, even if you are bigger than average.

Alternatively, though, we think that these jeans do have a place among the slim and average-sized population, too. They provide a nice change from regular jeans and, if worn right, actually can look great.

Jogger Jeans

Jogger jeans provide you with all of the style and fashion advantages of jeans whilst giving you the comfort of jogging bottoms.

Whilst you may need to shop around to find your perfect pair, they are an excellent choice for those who find jeans are too uncomfortable for them.

We actually love these, because they make life so easy. There’s nothing worse than getting home after a long day at work and feeling like you have to just go and pull off your jeans and swap them out for joggers, just so you can lounge around.

Jogger jeans completely change the game. You can get home from work and just dive straight onto the sofa with complete comfort.

Some people choose to go with multiple styles of jeans and alternate them throughout the week. If you’d like to see a bit more about this, then check out this video on the five styles of jeans that all men should own:

Flair or Bell Bottom Jeans

Flair jeans, or bell-bottom jeans, were tremendously popular in the 60s. These jeans were easily identified by their high torso cut, tight height fit, and wide loose bottoms. This jean style is not very easy to find in modern times. They are especially uncommon in men’s jeans but you do occasionally still find stores that sell women’s flair or bell-bottom jeans.

Who knows? Perhaps these jeans will make a huge comeback to once again be just as popular with men as skinny jeans are today.

How we chose the best skinny jeans for men

You’ve read through the article, and you’ve seen our suggestions, and now you’re probably wondering how we narrowed everything down to 11 pairs of jeans. It’s a thought that we are prepared to answer.

We wanted to make sure that we went through our purchasing tips and kept as true to them as we possibly could.

The first example would be to look at the quality. It would have been completely contradictory to include a pair of jeans that is not of great quality.

Instead, we carefully vetted jeans, checking material, fit, style, and durability to ensure that we were only picking the best for you.

The customer reviews also were greatly important to us. Whilst we would love to be the definitive voice on all jeans based on our sole experience, it’s simply not realistic. Going through the reviews from other purchasers allowed us to see what people really think.

After all, it only tells a small part of the story if we just go off of our own experience. We have particular body shapes and personal preferences when looking for jeans.

Getting a general understanding from hundreds of other people helped make our decisions a lot easier than they could have been.

Another thing we wanted to keep in mind was the price. As we discussed a bit earlier, we had to cater for multiple price points. Budgets can become really awkward when looking for a list of the best jeans, but we wanted to accommodate everyone.

As a result, we looked to provide a few pairs of jeans from multiple price points – from budget to designer.

Really, we just wanted to provide a list of the best jeans for men that would be as inclusive as possible.

In this article, we have tried to give our readers a full summarization of skinny jeans – from purchasing tips, to recommendations, and even style advice.

We truly hope that you have been able to learn something from this article. Not only that, but we would love to learn something from you, too.

For that, we want to ask you this question: What is your favorite type of jeans? Is it the regular fit, skinny fit, or something else?

  • While I enjoyed your article, being a huge fan of skinny jeans, I disagree with saying only men with very muscular legs should wear “extreme skinny” varieties. I have skinny legs, nice shaped, but I don’t go to the gym. I do some exercising at home on occasion and I work outside, but I don’t have huge quad or calf muscles, just what’s necessary for normal life. I look great in the many pairs of super and extreme skinny jeans I own. My wife agrees.

  • While it’s otherwise thorough, this article doesn’t describe available fabrics in sufficient detail. You can now buy “stretch” jeans (or any other kind of pants, for that matter) that may have 1 or 2 percent elastene with cotton or you can buy that blend with a high percentage of stretchy polyester added. Some may have stretchy waistbands, some may not. It makes shopping online, which has always been difficult, even harder. I’m “historically” a 34 but now have to size down to 32 in most of these super-stretchy fabrics. Contrary to the advertising, these high-stretch jeans get baggy as hell throughout the day. And this is all further complicated by an apparent return to higher-rise design. Finally, there is no safety in ordering a particular brand online just because you already have a pair that fits. There is utterly no consistency in sizing — not even inside stores. It’s maddening.

  • The best skinny jeans are those that are made of stretchy spandex type material. As a big broad dude when i first started wearing skinny jeans back in 2017 i couldn’t find any in my size so i bought stretchy polo jeans and had them tightened. Now in 2019 there is a lot more variety to choose from and more for bigger guys. I started wearing skinny jean shorts a year ago and just recently bought more of them and altered them into skinny short shorts which is where mens fashion needs to go next.
