Before you buy: 8 Things to consider when purchasing hair clippers
Choosing the best cordless hair clipper shouldn’t be a chore, and it isn’t, but do take your time while checking out important features, such as the following:
The clipper you choose needs enough power to get through even the toughest whiskers without bogging down. The clipper’s motor should work in conjunction with its blades to provide a close, clean cut that doesn’t irritate the skin.
A powerful motor doesn’t guarantee it’s noisy, either. Many clippers have motors with all the power you need but aren’t so loud that they’ll wake the neighbors or those in your household.
Many cordless hair clippers come with stainless steel blades, although you can pay a bit more and purchase clippers with ceramic steel blades, which some experts – as well as some customers – say provide an even closer cut.
However, there are plenty of stainless steel (aka as “carbon-coated”) blades that can handle your every clipping need.
The blade’s shape is something to consider, as well. Wide, curved blades cover a lot of territory when cutting hair and can save you the time, and hassle, of having to make several passes to get a clean cut.
The quality of the clipper’s battery, including its battery life, is extremely important when buying a cordless clipper.
As we’ll discuss further in this post, cordless clippers provide the convenience of being able to maneuver around without being restricted by a power cord, but convenience also depends, in part, on the battery.
The standard runtime of a cordless clipper battery is 40 to 60 minutes before it needs charging, although some offer more battery life than that.
The best batteries tend to have Lithium-ion technology that recharges faster than other types of batteries and has a longer runtime.
Another thing to consider regarding batteries is that they should maintain their maximum cutting power even when the charge runs low.
It’s also convenient to own a clipper that has a battery life indicator, which lets you know when it’s finished charging. That’s said, it’s important to note how long it takes to charge the battery fully. In some cases, that’s 24 hours.
4. Grip & ergonomics
You should always check the size, weight, and grip of a cordless hair clipper before you buy it. Most clipper manufacturers today emphasize ergonomics to ensure that the clipper remains comfortable in the user’s hand at all times.
A clipper’s size and build are important to most people, and it comes down to personal preference and what allows you to get the best cut. The same goes for a clipper’s weight; in some cases, a heavier, bulkier clipper packs a more powerful punch, but not always.
Most cordless hair clippers come with various attachments and accessories, such as trimmer guards and the like. Professionals probably need more attachments than do-it-yourselfers, but that doesn’t mean the latter has to skimp on accessories.
The more accessories, the better, in most cases, but if you’re not going to use them all, you may be able to save some money by buying a clipper that has less.
Many clippers come with a built-in trimmer designed to handle detail work, such as trimming around the ears. You’ll need to purchase a trimmer if your clipper kit doesn’t include one.
7. Does it have a cord?
While we’re devoting this space to a review of cordless clippers, many products have cordless and corded capability. That’s as convenient as it gets, especially if you work as a professional barber or stylist and sap your clipper’s battery life during a long day.
Having a cord handy means you can continue clipping and cutting without interruption.
8. Ease of cleaning
Consistent maintenance will keep your clipper running efficiently and help extend its lifespan. Most clippers come with a cleaning brush, or should, while many are waterproof and allow you to clean them by rinsing.
Next, let’s dive into our reviews of the best cordless hair clippers.

6. Kemei Professional Hair Clippers (For home and professional use)
- Excellent for home use

Best cordless clipper for:
Stay-at-home barbers as well as professionals
The Kemei clipper is a commercial, professional-grade product that many barbers and stylists – or do-it-yourselfers – use at home. Not that it’s designed just for home use, but it’s easy enough to use that you can give the whole family a trim if you desire.
This clipper’s blades are made of bearing steel that is durable and sharp. You don’t have to worry about hair clogging, or that you’ll nick and irritate the skin.

- You have to be careful about not losing its small parts.

7. Conair Even Cut Dual Blade Clipper (For home use)
- Exceptional battery life
- Smart dual blade system
- Very affordable
Best cordless clipper for:
- Quick, efficient cuts
Conair’s Even Cut Dual Blade clippers are quite unusual: they are built on a dual blade system, which means you can simply rock back and forth and achieve an incredibly fast, incredibly easy cut or shave.
For professionals, they will likely be an additional purchase: they aren’t amazing at close cutting or detailing, and nor do they pretend to be. However, they are a fantastically affordable and very easy to use alternative to many similar products which don’t offer nearly the same value or ease of use.
What do they offer?
Well, they run on a Lithium-Ion Battery, which gives them a 3 hour charge time (incredibly long for cordless clippers!) and makes them very powerful – great for fast, efficient cutting.
Their blades are made of very good quality stainless steel, which remains sharp after continual use and makes for a very solid cut without too much risk of gnawing at the skull or damaging the skin.
They are ergonomically designed, and fit very comfortably in hand. So you can use them with great ease and speed and have plenty of control over them at all times.
And they come with 1-4 comb guides, ear taper guide, oil, and cleaning brush, so for home use, this is a fantastic full-service set.
Ideally, you’ll be using these for fairly simple cuts; for super detailed, delicate cuts, you may be looking at a slightly higher-ticket item. But if that’s all you’re looking to do, these are as good value as you’ll get from your money.
- The battery life is basically unrivaled
- The simple back-and-forth cutting motion is so easy
- Great, great value
- They’re not ideal for close, detailed cuts
For an awful lot of people, these Conair clippers could be a game-changer: fast, easy to use, and super affordable.
8. Wahl 1872 SuperCordless Professional Cord/Cordless Hair Clipper (For home use)
- High precision chrome blades
- Very quiet
- Environmentally-friendly battery
Best cordless clipper for:
- Precision cuts without leaving the house
There are lots of reasons to like Wahl’s 1872 SuperCordless Hair Clippers. For one thing, they are built on a Single Rotary Engine using an environmentally-friendly NiMh battery (with 70 minutes of battery life); this makes them not just very powerful but also highly economical, energy-wise.
They also feature high precision, chrome coated blades, and the Quick Change Blade System is highly useful, making for a faster, more efficient cut – you’ll save plenty of time with these guys, without sacrificing the quality of the cut.
They come with 4 different guards for sizing, which is ideal for home barbers who might not yet have achieved the nuance to go fully free-hand. And they come with both a taper blade and a fade blade, which is great if you want to go all ambitious on us.
For those less experienced with high-quality products, you might be a little surprised that the 1872s don’t make as much noise as you’d imagine, and they’re surprisingly light – though certainly not too light!
The grip is nice and firm, making them secure and reducing the risk of slippage. And they are very durable, with many reviewers commenting how long theirs have managed to last.
- Super efficient battery and very powerful
- Blades are great quality and lovely for precision
- They feel great for novices and experts alike!
- A few reviewers point out that the blades sometimes come a little wonky – though they can be fairly easily fixed and customized
A solid choice for home use and professional use alike – solid precision and good value.
How we chose these products for our reviews
It’s hard to beat the convenience of cordless hair clippers in many ways, not the least of which is that you don’t have to contend with a power cord during their use. However, not all cordless clippers are the same.
We separated the best from the rest, however, by examining several variables, including ease of use and the reviews of others, especially the reviews of customers.
We also considered other factors, including power, cutting ability, the kind of attachments and other accessories that came with each clipper, and whether it was good for professionals or suitable for do-it-yourselfers at home.
11 Tips for using and maintaining cordless clippers
Getting the most from your hair clippers, whether you’re a professional or do-it-yourselfer, means using them the right way and maintaining them correctly.
1. Wash your hair
The starting point for using your hair clippers is washing your hair. Doing so gets rid of the dirt, grime, and leftover hair product while also making it easier to comb your hair to get rid of tangles and potential snags.
You can leave your hair wet while clipping it, and many barbers spritz your hair with water before they begin clipping, or you can trim it when it’s dry.
2. Learn your blade guards
Your clipper’s blade guards determine the length of the cut. In general, the smaller the guard, the shorter the cut.
Note: You can use different guard settings while creating a gentle fade haircut. Also, you should start with the longest blade guard to take off the longest growth.
3. Move against the growth of hair
Your hair grows down on the sides and back, so you’ll want to move the clipper upward on the sides and back. Near the top of your head, you want to move the clipper from the front to back.
Make sure that you scoop the hair with the blade; start by moving close to the skin with your clippers and then scoop a bit outwards. Short, scooping strokes all over the head help to create a softer cut.
4. Use a lower number guide around the ears
Even if you want to keep your hair all the same length, you should use a lower-number guard around the ears and sideburns. Doing so will give you a cleaner look all-around. Use the clipper’s trimmer attachment to trim the sideburns and back of the neck.
Meanwhile, use scissors to trim around ears to get rid of scraggly hairs. Just make sure to use a sharp pair of scissors meant for cutting hair.
5. Be prepared for the mess
A barber’s cape and towel are essential for preventing clipped hair from falling onto clothing and the floor. If you’re at home, you may want to place plastic sheeting on the floor to catch stray hairs, too.
6. Trimming the top of the head
The best way to trim the top of your head is to start at the forehead and work toward the top of the head while following the hairline. Work slowly and steadily to catch as much hair as possible with each pass.
7. Cleaning your clippers to keep them in top shape
It’s essential that you clean your blades consistently (a couple of times a week, at least) to keep them from becoming dull, which results in patchy haircuts that are a bit painful. Also, dirty blades can cause skin irritation and can even infect your skin.
You can use a blade wash to disinfect and clean the blades or a blade brush, which usually comes with the clipper. In many cases, you can rinse the blades under tap water; just make sure that the clipper you choose is waterproof.
8. Oil your blades
Failing to oil your clipper’s blades will shorten their lifespan and cause them to cut your hair less efficiently. That’s especially true for professional clippers that get a lot of use.
Make sure that your blades are clean and dry before you apply the oil and get rid of any excess hair. Apply a few drops while spreading it across the top of the blades, then turn your clipper on and let it run for 20 seconds or so.
Use a paper towel to dab away any drops left behind after you’ve finished oiling.
A couple of other important things to keep in mind while oiling your clipper’s blades: 1) only use oil meant of hair clippers and trimmers. Other types of oil may cause it to function poorly or even damage it beyond repair, and 2) you only need to use a few drops of oil.
9. Sharpening the blades
The blades on some hair clippers, including some of those we review above, have self-sharpening blades. Others you may want to sharpen with a honing stone while applying light pressure.
How long a clipper’s blades retain their sharpness depends on how often they’re used. In general, however, blades should remain sharp for three to six months before needing re-sharpening.
You only need to apply light pressure when sharpening blades with a honing stone. Run the blades across the stone about 10 times, rinse the stone, and then repeat the process once more.
10. Clean the length comb
The length combs – or adjusters – are the snap-on plastic clips that adjust the length of the cut. Like the blades, they can become grimy and covered with clippings from repeated use.
To clean them, remove them from the clippers and submerge then in hot, soapy water. Scrub them with a soft cloth and then lay them out on a towel to dry.
A clipper spray keeps the blades cool and disinfects the blades, both of which are of special importance in a professional barbershop or salon.
Cordless vs. corded clippers
Does it matter if you use a cordless or corded clipper? Not really, although there are differences between the two, as well as the pros and cons of each. Let’s take a closer look.
1. The main difference
Not to be overly obvious, but the primary difference between a cordless and corded hair clipper is the power cord.
A corded clipper has a power cord attached to the bottom of its body, and the cord supplies the power.
A cordless hair clipper doesn’t have a cord attached to it, and it runs on battery power, but many cordless clippers have the option of being used with a power cord, as well.
The cord of a cordless clipper attaches to a charging base that attaches to the clipper for recharging.
2. Why you need a cordless clipper
There are plenty of advantages to choosing a cordless clipper over a corded one. For one, it provides the mobility and flexibility that a corded clipper can’t match, because of the length – and presence – of the power cord.
You can pretty much use a cordless clipper wherever you want, not just in the bathroom because there isn’t a cord holding it back. There’s no getting tangled with the cord or the cord becoming knotted.
3. This disadvantages of a cordless clipper
Cordless clippers run on battery power, which means they stop working when the battery runs out. Most trimmers provide 40 to 60 minutes of runtime on a full charge, but others offer even more than that.
Cordless clippers come with a charging stand or a charging cord. How long it takes to charge a cordless clipper varies from model to model, and some need several hours to return the clipper to full power.
However, many hair clippers – including some of those we review above – have a quick-charge function, which supplies enough power for one trim after the battery runs down.
While the power of some clippers tends to wane as its battery power gets low, the best clippers tend to maintain their power no matter how much power remains.
4. Why you need a corded clipper
The one thing you don’t have to worry about with a corded hair clipper is running out of power in the middle of a job – or, at any time, for that matter.
In general, corded clippers tend to have more power than cordless clippers, which isn’t to say that cordless clippers don’t have enough juice to get the job done – far from it – and you don’t have to worry about a corded clipper slowing down when its power source wanes.
5. The disadvantages of a corded clipper
We’ve already discussed the primary disadvantage of a corded clipper, i.e., the cord restricts the user’s movement and mobility. Plus, cords can become tangled or knotted.
7 Useful cordless hair clipper accessories
Many cordless hair clippers come with a variety of tools that help make your job easier. Others have some accessories.
Either way, having everything you need on hand not only enables you to achieve an ideal cut but can help enhance your clipper’s performance and even extend its lifespan.
Here are some accessories you should consider having in your clipper kit.
1. Blade wash
Keeping your clipper’s blades clean and disinfected should be part of your routine, whether you’re an at-home barber or one who works in a professional setting.
A wash that can clean, disinfect, and lubricate the blades – as well as cool them after hours of use – is very useful. Consider Andis’s Cool Care Plus for Blades when shopping for a superior blade wash.
2. Clipper oil
We discussed the importance of blade oil in our section above about maintaining hair clippers, but it’s worth repeating. Blade oil will improve the performance of your clipper while helping it last a long time.
The Oster Blade Lube Premium Lubricating Oil is a product favored by many users.
3. Clipper brush
Keeping your blades free of stray hair, dust, and grime is a must, and while many clippers come with a brush, you can always buy high-quality brush such as the Scalpmaster Clipper Cleaning Brush if not.
4. Honing stone
Keeping the blades of your clipper sharpened will help it to perform at a high level even during long hours and weeks of use. The Sharp Pebble Premium Whetstone Sharpening Tool is a handy accessory to have.
5. Barber scissors
Scissors are an essential tool for professional barbers and do-it-yourselfers. We like ULG Hair Cutting Shears, although many quality scissors abound.
6. Barber’s cape
Cutting hair can be a bit messy, but a quality barber’s cape will keep clothes free from trimmed hair and make clean up a helluva lot easier. Check out this Nylon Salon Cape by HairDay Care.
7. Blade spray
Blade spray, like blade wash, is excellent for cleaning, lubricating, cooling, and disinfecting clipper blades. The Oster Clipper Blade Care Spray is a great tool to have handy.
Whether you’re a professional or a stay-at-home barber, cordless hair clippers represent a very useful, convenient tool that has a positive impact on your grooming routine. Hopefully, the reviews above will help you to find a hair clipper that’s most suitable for you.
We’d love to hear from you, too. Do you own a cordless hair clipper? If so, what brand and model? We welcome your feedback and suggestions.
