As men, we go to great lengths in making sure that our hair, beard, and mustache look good, that we smell good, that we present to the world our very best selves.
But what about our skin? Skin is the largest organ on our body, yet, as men, we tend to ignore it. Women? They know what the hell they’re doing when it comes to taking care of their skin.
So, let’s get in the game, gentlemen. Let’s take proper care of our skin, which includes using body lotion – the subject of this post. We’ll discuss the best body lotion for men – leading off with Brickell Men’s Deep Moisture Body Lotion for Men – and delve deep into all things lotion. Before you buy: 5 Things to consider when purchasing body lotion
Whether you’re a first-time buyer or a man who’s used body lotion for years, it’s helpful to know what to look for when shopping for a lotion that’s suitable for you. So, before grabbing the biggest brand name with the coolest bottle that you think you’ve heard something about, keep the following things in mind.
1. What’s in it?
Just like clothes make the man, ingredients make the body lotion – but not just any ingredients. Here are some ingredients that are important for making a quality lotion:
- Ceramides – We’ll talk more in-depth about ceramides later, but they’re an ingredient you should embrace.
- Alpha Hydroxy Acids – While the name Alpha Hydroxy Acids sounds chemically-daunting, it’s referring to acids naturally found in fruit. AHAs are good for the skin, because they act as an exfoliant to clear away dead skin cells while smoothing out the skin.
- Antioxidants – “Antioxidant” is a buzz word often associated with food and healthy diets, but it’s appropriate to skin health, too. Antioxidants – such as pomegranate and grapeseed oil, among others – purge the skin of harmful free radicals.
- Emollients – Emollients such as jojoba oil and glyceryl stearate help smooth the skin.
- Humectants – Humectants provide hydration to the skin’s out layer. Examples of humectants include glycerin, hyaluronic acid, and panthenol.
- Occlusives – Compounds such as lanolin, petrolatum, mineral oil, and waxes create a barrier that locks moisture into the skin.
- Sunscreen – Many body lotions contain sunscreen, and that’s a good thing. It’s always nice to have extra protection against the sun’s harmful UV rays.
2. What shouldn’t be in it?
There is a variety of ingredients that are helpful to avoid, such as parabens, DMDM Hydantoin, Retinyl Palmitate, and alcohols. Look for products loaded with natural ingredients, instead.
3. Consider the moisturizing agents
Perhaps the primary reason to use body lotion is that it hydrates and refreshes dry skin. So, check to see what the lotion uses as a moisturizer, which may come in the form of:
- Butters – Shea or cocoa is the most common
- Carrier oils
- Essential oils – i.e. peppermint oil, tea tree oil, green tea oil, etc.
4. Consider your skin type
The skin on your body is thicker than it is on your face, but many body lotions work as a face moisturizer, as well. The choice is yours; you can use a combination lotion or one made just for your body, just remember that the two types of skin are a bit different. But, no matter what, always consider your skin type when choosing a lotion:
- Dry skin – If you have dry skin, a thicker, creamier lotion is well suited for you, especially in the cold, dry winter months. Look for a lotion that contains alpha hydroxy acids, as well as petrolatum or lanolin. You should switch to a lighter moisturizer during the warmer summer months.
- Oily skin – Don’t let your oily skin trick you into thinking that you don’t need to moisturize it. Without proper moisturizing, after all, your skin may show signs of premature aging and other damage. That said, choose a lotion that’s oil-free and lighter in texture. Many brands offer products designed specifically for people with oily skin.
- Normal skin – Skin maintenance isn’t as difficult for people with this type of skin. Consider yourself lucky, you normal-skinned folks! Don’t neglect your skin, however, but choose lighter lotions that aren’t heavy or greasy. Remember: just because your skin is “normal” doesn’t mean you should ignore moisturizing it.
- Sensitive skin – Be careful with what you choose in a body lotion if you have skin that’s easily irritated. Here are some guidelines:
- Use mineral sunscreens instead of chemical (check this if your body lotion includes sunscreen).
- Don’t use lotions that contain perfume or scent
- Avoid lotions that include sodium laurel sulfate, which is an irritant for many people with sensitive skin.
- Avoid oils such as peppermint and lemongrass.
5. Check the reviews of others
When in doubt, do some online research. Check out a product’s ratings and the reviews of users. Not that others’ opinions are the final word, but reviews should provide a consensus.
The 7 best body lotions for men 2020
For a company that’s only been around since 2014, Brickell certainly shows up in a lot of ‘best of’ product reviews, including our own here at Balding Beards. But, hey, that’s how it works when you make good products that people love.
Brickell has another hit with its Deep Moisture Body Lotion for Men. It’s hard to beat as far as organic body lotions go. Brickell’s products are vegan, 100% organic when possible, and contain no parabens, sulfates, gluten, synthetic fragrances, or others.
What their Deep Moisture Body Lotion for men does include is the likes of jojoba oil, green tea, olive oil, white willow bark extract, coconut oil, aloe leaf juice, and more. All of its ingredients work to hydrate, protect, and tighten skin, and you don’t have to worry about suffering an allergic reaction from man-made chemicals found in some lotions.
Brickell’s go-to body lotion is light enough to not leave a greasy residue and absorbs quickly. It’s good for men of any age and skin type and for any man who wants to relieve and prevent dry, cracked skin. It also works to tighten the skin, which is a definite benefit for men who are showing (skin) signs of aging.
It also has a pleasant, natural scent that’s a pleasing blend of peppermint, lemongrass, and eucalyptus oils.
- Natural and organic ingredients
- Good for men of all ages
- Absorbs quickly
- Not as long-lasting as some lotions
Brickell has made a fast rise in the world of men’s grooming products, but you shouldn’t think that their brand is over-hyped. Their Deep Moisture Body Lotion For Men delivers on its promise to keep skin hydrated, refreshed, and smooth.
How good is Lubriderm’s 3-in-1 Body Lotion for men? So good that some reviewers say that it’s even better than their lotion designed for women. That’s saying a lot, considering the Lubriderm name and its reputation for delivering high-quality products for women – and now men.
Their 3-in-1 Body Lotion (with light fragrance) for men features their triple-action formula that moisturizes, soothes, and improves the appearance of dry or damaged skin. It’s a lightweight formula that absorbs quickly into the skin.
Better yet, you can also use it as a facial moisturizer after you’ve finished your morning shave. It’s non-greasy, so it won’t leave your face looking extra shiny. And, last but not least, the Lubriderm 3-in-1 body lotion has a formula specifically designed for men’s skin.
The key ingredients in Lubriderm’s 3-in-1 lotion are aloe, mineral oil, glycerin, and vitamin E. It’s good for all skin types but particularly effective for men with normal to oily skin. The one ingredient it doesn’t have is sunscreen, which is important, of course, but you can easily use it in conjunction with your favorite sun protector.
We also like the 3-in-1 lotion’s scent, which is musky and described as “black pepper and sandalwood.” It’s a man’s scent, for sure. It’s another reason why we think it’s one of the best men’s body lotions for 2020. We think this is the best men’s scented body lotion, as well.
- Hydrates, soothes, and softens skin
- Is effective as a facial moisturizer
- Lightweight, not heavy
- Doesn’t contain sun protection
Developed by dermatologists, Lubriderm’s 3-in-1 lotion is a versatile solution for hydrating and soothing dry skin. It goes on light and easy, absorbs into your skin quickly, and smells good.
You’ll see the word “ceramide” tossed around a lot in any review of CeraVe’s Daily Face and Body Moisturizer, which leads to the question: “What the hell is a ceramide?”
In layman’s terms, a ceramide is a lipid molecule that’s an essential part of the skin’s barrier. Ceramide lipids prevent excess moisture loss from the skin while also acting as a barrier against harmful substances penetrating your skin. We think this is the best body lotion for men with dry skin.
Because CeraVe’s body lotion contains three essential ceramides (ceramides 1, 3, and 6-ll), it helps the skin attract, hold, and distribute moisture. It also provides long-lasting hydration that leads to better skin repair and replenishment.
Another key ingredient in the Daily Face and Body Moisturizer is hyaluronic acid. You’ll find hyaluronic acid in the majority of cosmetic treatments, because it increases moisture retention in the skin. It also helps skin to repair itself.
CeraVe utilizes controlled-release technology to deliver its formula to the skin and to hydrate it all day long. The cream goes on light and non-greasy and is suitable for every skin type except the most sensitive. There’s no fragrance, so you can use it with your favorite, high-quality cologne. Just remember to apply your cologne like a man, not an animal.
Another reason to like CeraVe’s Daily Face and Body Moisturizer is that it has the National Eczema Association’s Seal of Acceptance. The NEA only awards its Seal to products that meet their criteria for use with eczema.
- Helps the skin maintain its natural protective barrier
- Provides 24-hour hydration
- Excellent for healing dry skin
- Not suitable for sensitive skin
CeraVe provides some of the most effective skin care you can get without a prescription. Their Moisturizing Cream With Pump is free of fragrance and is hypoallergenic, non-comedogenic, and non-irritating. It provides the protection and hydration that your skin needs.
The Vaseline name is synonymous with skin care and hardly a new kid on the block in terms of big name brands. Founded in 1859 by British chemist Robert Cheesebrough, Vaseline can safely claim that it’s among the original skin experts.
Cheesbrough developed Vaseline after watching Pennsylvania oilmen use the byproduct of the oil-drilling process to help heal skin cuts and burns, and that began his quest to seek effective solutions to America’s dry skin.
One such modern solution is Vaseline’s Fast Absorbing Body and Face Lotion for men. It’s good for all skin types and consists of a non-greasy moisturizer that is said to relieve dry skin in as little as 15 seconds. It not only works fast but also claims to keep dry skin healed for three weeks.
Vaseline takes the business of skin care very seriously and reminds its customers that the skin is the body’s first line of defense. If your skin is strong and healthy, you’ll be strong and healthy. Their body and face lotion fortifies your skin and keeps it resilient.
It’s also a good bargain, because it comes in a huge 20.3 fluid ounce container that will last you a good, long while, even if you’re bathing in the stuff on a daily basis. Rest assured, you don’t need to use a bathtub-full to get the skincare you need.
- Heals and strengthens skin
- Proven brand name
- Scent is too strong for some
“Big brand name” doesn’t always mean better, but Vaseline’s Fast Absorbing Body & Face Lotion is worth a serious look. It works quickly to heal dry skin and also works well as a facial moisturizer.
We discussed ceramides earlier. Now, let’s talk about Glycolic Alpha Hydroxy Acid, because it’s the key ingredient in the top-notch Alpha Skin Care Renewal Body Lotion.
Alpha Hydroxy Acid (AHA) is a group of natural acids found in foods – including citric acid, glycolic acid (found in sugar cane), lactic acid, and others. It’s used in a variety of ways – including as a way to treat the pain and discomfort associated with fibromyalgia – but also for moisturizing and exfoliating the skin. It’s also effective in fighting the effects of aging on the skin while also firming and smoothing skin.
Glycolic AHA, derived from sugar cane, is excellent for getting rid of dirt and dead skin cells, which cause dryness and leave your skin feeling rough. It also boosts collagen production; collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body and gives skin strength and elasticity. The body produces less collagen as we get older, which causes sagging and wrinkled skin, among other not-so-nice symptoms.
There’s a lot else to like about Alpha Skin Care’s Renewal Body Lotion. It’s a potent exfoliator but isn’t harsh and abrasive like other products designed to remove dead skin cells. Meanwhile, users say it lightens discolorations and, as mentioned, smooths out wrinkled and sagging skin.
We also like that this lotion doesn’t include parabens, chemicals, or other ingredients that are abrasive to the skin. It’s great for almost every skin type but not as effective in treating the most sensitive skin types (that may need a dermatologist’s care).
Alpha Skin Care Renewal Body Lotion has the look and feel of a typical body lotion (white and creamy) but isn’t too heavy. You’ll only need a couple of minutes before it absorbs into your skin. Some reviewers also use it at bedtime, so they’ll wake up with softer skin.
- Ideal for removing dead skin cells
- Treats skin that’s showing signs of aging
- Somewhat greasy
The word “Renewal” in the title says it all, as this lotion transforms tired-looking skin into healthy skin that looks and feels refreshed. It works naturally to renew your skin – just as its name implies.
Let’s make something clear right from the start: Hempz’s Original Herbal Body Moisturizer doesn’t contain THC (the chemical that provides the buzz). Sorry fellas – that is, if you’re interested in that kind of recreation.
Seriously, though, the Original Herbal Body Moisturizer has everything many men want (natural, cruelty-free ingredients) in a grooming product without including what many men don’t want (parabens, gluten, and, yes, THC).
A key ingredient in Hempz body moisturizer is hemp seed oil, which is a perfectly-balanced oil that contains all of the 21 known amino acids, as well as essential fatty acids that are crucial to healthy skin. It’s also rich in super polyunsaturated fatty acids, which help relieve dermatitis and other skin conditions.
Then again, all of Hempz’s products include hemp seed oil – and have since the company was founded in 1998.
But, there’s more, including shea butter and ginseng that help calm and soothe the skin, as well as vitamins A, C, and E that protect skin from natural and environmental pollutants. Shea butter is the ingredient that provides a light barrier to keep moisture in the skin and gives a light conditioning coat. It won’t leave a greasy film on your skin, however.
You’ll quickly notice the Hempz Original Body Moisturizer’s scent, which has been compared to banana or passion fruit but isn’t overly sweet.
- Made with a nice variety of natural ingredients
- Very affordable
- Effective for all skin types, including sensitive skin
- Scent is too strong for some people
If you’re looking for a natural, vegan, body lotion, then Hempz Original Body Moisturizer is for you. Even if you’re not looking for that type of lotion, it’s still an excellent choice. Hemp seed oil is great for the skin and just part of why this oil is so soothing and healthy for your skin.
Eucerin’s Intensive Repair Lotion is another product that takes advantage of the moisturizing and cleansing properties of Alpha-Hydroxy (AHA). Their lotion provides gentle exfoliation of the skin with intense moisturizing for smoother, healthy skin.
Then again, Eucerin is another brand that knows a thing or two, based on experience. After all, they’ve been around for over 100 years. Eucerin combines skin science innovation with a commitment to quality and is recommended by dermatologists worldwide.
Their Intensive Repair Body Lotion lives up it to its high billing in many ways. For one, its triple action formula moisturizes, exfoliates, and conditions dry, rough skin. It has humectants, such as glycerin, that draw water into the outer layer of the skin, while keratin helps keep the moisture in the skin where it belongs.
Here’s another thing: Eucerin Intensive Repair Rich Feel Body Lotion is excellent for black skin and, in our thinking, the best body lotion for black men. There are many skin issues that black men (and women) must deal with on a daily basis, including ingrown hairs, dark spots, and hyperpigmentation, dry and ashy skin (that has a gray appearance), as well as damage from the sun. African-American men are often at a greater risk for sun-related health issues – such as skin cancer – because it’s harder to detect changes in skin marks or discolorations.
Eucerin is excellent for the dry, rough skin many black men contend with and is soothing, because it contains menthol and oatmeal. It holds moisture in, instead of depleting it.
- A little goes a long way
- Excellent for African-American men
- Gently exfoliates while providing excellent moisture
- Alpha-hydroxy may make the skin more sensitive to the sun
This is a good all-around body lotion that’s great for anyone who has dryer, rougher skin. It helps rid the skin of dead cells and keeps moisture from depleting too quickly.
The art of applying body lotion
OK, so applying body lotion isn’t an “art” like, say, painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, but there is a right way and wrong way to do it, like anything else. Let’s check out some rules of the road:
1. Clean your skin first
The problem with applying body lotion to skin that is dirty, oily, or both is that the lotion traps the grime into your skin. That’s not good. The best advice, then, is to apply your body lotion immediately after you’ve showered and thoroughly cleansed the skin. Remember: the air starts drawing moisture from your skin as soon as you step out of the shower, so apply your lotion even if your skin is still a bit damp.
2. Less is more
The adage “less is more” applies to most body lotions, especially high-quality ones. There’s no need to bathe in your lotion, so apply a small amount at first and only apply more if parts of your skin remain uncovered. You can always apply more during the day, if needed. Also, keep in mind that elbows and knees tend to dry out faster than other parts of the body, especially during the winter and in harsh climates.
3. Pick a lotion that’s right for your skin type
We’ve already mentioned how skin type is a key factor as you look for a lotion that’s most suitable for you. As a general rule, lightweight, non-greasy lotions absorb quickly but may not moisturize as intensely as thicker lotions. On the flip side, thicker lotions may take longer to rub into the skin.
4. Take your time
Give yourself some time to apply lotion all over your body. True, some mornings include a mad rush to get out the door – we get it – but try to leave enough time for a full grooming routine.
5. Where to start?
It’s really up to you where you apply lotion first. A recommended way is to start low and work your way up; you can begin at your ankles and move toward your neck section by section. Only put enough lotion on your hands to do each section. After you’ve worked your way up, apply lotion to your feet (if you so choose). Massage some lotion into the top of your foot and work forward towards your toes. Finally, rub some lotion into your heels with a circular motion.
6. Apply light pressure
It’s not necessary to “scrub” your lotion into the skin, as if you were washing a car. Instead, apply light pressure – just enough so the lotion absorbs into the skin – and use circular motions. The pressure should come from the palms of your hands, not your fingers.
7. But what about my back?
We’ve all been there: you’re in the middle of your day, perhaps at your desk or standing in line, when the Biggest Itch of All Time suddenly shows up in the middle of your back, agonizingly out of reach of your fingers. Meanwhile, the rest of your skin doesn’t itch, because you applied lotion to it during the day. So, what to do?
Have no fear, friends; there are many ways to apply lotion to your back – even if you don’t have a significant other to lend a hand or two.
- Method 1 – Squirt a line of lotion on the tops of your forearms and backs of your hands. Reach behind you and apply the lotion to your back while using a motion that’s similar to a windshield wiper. This method should cover the majority of the skin on your back.
- Method 2 – Use a rubber or plastic spatula to apply your lotion. Squeeze a decent amount of lotion onto the spatula and then spread the lotion on your back with a circular motion. Start with your lower back and then reach over your shoulders to apply lotion on your upper back.
- Method 3 – Use a long piece of plastic wrap. Apply a line of lotion onto the plastic wrap – make sure the piece is long enough to reach all areas of your back – and then use the wrap to apply the lotion, starting at your lower back and working up.
- Method 4 – Use a paint roller and roller cover. Nothing too complicated here: you squeeze a line of lotion onto the roller and apply it over your back. What’s nice is that you can buy different handle lengths to fit your height and torso. Don’t laugh – it works.
Body lotions, creams, butter, etc.
It’s a fact that not all body lotions are the same. It’s also a fact that not all skin moisturizers for men are lotion. While this review focuses on lotion, we also want to mention the different types of moisturizer that, in some cases, fall under a broad subheading called “lotion.”
Body lotion’s basic function is to keep your skin moisturized. It’s thicker than hand and face lotion and contains moisturizing agents that hydrate the skin, including butters, essential oils, and carrier oils.
Body lotion is also scented and unscented and, depending on the product, made with natural, organic, and synthetic ingredients. It also has many benefits, including:
While body lotion can’t stop the slow, steady grind of aging, it can help your skin regain elasticity that’s gradually lost over the years. It can help reduce fine lines and wrinkles to give your skin a more youthful appearance.
- Protection against pollutants
We’re exposed to pollutants and other environmental irritants every day, but emollients found in certain lotions create a barrier that protects the skin. Lotion also serves as a protectant in harsh weather conditions, including the skin-challenging effects of winter.
- Heal the skin
Dermatologists often prescribe body lotion to prevent skin diseases and for patients already suffering from skin disease.
- It reduces inflammation
Lotion helps reduce inflammation of the skin and often includes skin-friendly ingredients, such as vitamins.
Body creams are thicker than body lotions, because they contain a larger percentage of oil. Creams are usually stored in jars, because they’re too thick for use in bottles or pumps. They’re well suited for dry skin, because they provide extra protection, due to their thickness. Lotion, because it has a lighter weight, is easier to spread over a large area than cream.
Creams also tend to feel a bit greasier than lotions, because of their high viscosity.
Body oil is more popular than lotion in many parts of the world (but not in the U.S.). Oil, like lotion, protects the skin’s lipid barrier and works wonderfully to hold moisture in the skin. They’re also less likely than other types of moisturizers to clog pores. Lotions tend to have more beneficial ingredients – such as aloe vera, shea butter, vitamins E and D – that replenish and repair the skin.
Body butter provides an extra-strong barrier that locks in moisture and is particularly effective for people with dry, delicate skin or in a harsher, dry climate, where moisture quickly escapes from the skin. Many kinds of butter include plant-derived oils and fatty acids.
How and why we chose these products
While it’s always a challenge to narrow down a list top-quality products when there are so many good options, we think you’ll benefit from the best lotions for men listed above. We looked for lotions that aptly performed their basic task – moisturizing the skin – while also having a bit of versatility, i.e., they protect, replenish, and even help slow the effects of aging on the skin.
Other factors influencing our decision include price (we strive to find products that fit any budget), ingredients, how well the lotion absorbs into the skin, and the reviews of customers. Less important factors include fragrance, etc. It’s a bonus if a lotion smells good but not overly important in the overall scheme of things. As always, the more organic and natural ingredients, the better.
And that wraps up another review, friends. As always, we welcome your feedback. Is there a body lotion you prefer? Have you used a lotion on this list? What are your thoughts? Is there a product we overlooked? Let us know!
